HEALTHCARE MANAGEMENT FOR THE ELDERLY

Posted by healthbook.pk

It is a known fact that all people go through different stages in life. And at the end of the day we all become old and age as time passes by. It is within this context that our concern focuses on our elderly population, more commonly as Geriatric population.

People age and with them ages also is the body. Our organs and bodily function is expected to deteriorate as we grow old. And depending on how we have been taking care of our body during our youth, will our body stand the odds of our attitude to our body during our golden age.

Issues that needs to be addressed when dealing with the elderly includes hearing loss, blurred vision, and body weakness attributed to old age, among others.

Here are some tips on how to care for our old age people.

1. Get their attention first.

Put your hand slowly on their shoulder and call their name and introduce yourself, before giving important information.

2. Reduce background noise.
Turn off music or television. When in restaurants and social gatherings, sit away from crowded areas.

3. Speak clearly and face the person.
People with hearing loss hate mumbling. Face the person and enunciate clearly. Speak at a speed slightly slower than normal (but not too slow).

4. Speak loudly.
Speak a little more loudly than normal, but DON’T Shout.

5. Repeat yourself.
People with hearing loss may compensate by nodding as though they understand, when in fact they did not hear you at all.

6. Have a good lighting.
Facial expression and body language can seem more clearly in well- lit areas.

Understand common Elder diagnoses:

It might not be appropriate to ask people about their medical conditions. Asking a combative patient, if they have Alzheimer’s disease would not be a good start, especially if the answer is no.

But understanding some common ailments and symptoms can offer insight into what your elder patient can be dealing.

1. Heart conditions.
This includes hypertension, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure and coronary artery disease. Side effects include fatigue and lack of physical strength.

2. Dementia.
In addition to loss of memory, they may experience paranoia, aggression, agitation and lack of self- care thus requiring assistance in their day to day activities.

3. Delirium.
Symptoms include shaking and shortened attention span, and extreme mood swings.

4. Depression.
Depression is very common among the elderly. Sadness, irritability, fatigue and feelings of worthlessness are all symptoms that we should be most understanding.

Respecting our elder generations in Pakistan should always be inculcated in our hearts and minds especially by the younger generations, since our family culture is described as closely knit family ties. The respect that we have for them can give us a broader understanding of the changes that they are going through, that goes along with their age. Understanding, loving and respecting them should be our own way to appreciate and celebrate the life that they have shared with us.
