MOST COMMON DISEASES IN PAKISTAN

The 10 most common diseases in Pakistan are gathered to remind you of the existence of these diseases and possible ways for you to defend yourself from these common but dangerous diseases. Pakistan is ranked as 122 out of 190 countries in the world in terms of health care standards. Here are most common diseases.

1. Mosquito borne diseases.
This includes malaria, dengue fever and yellow fever are the three most common borne diseases that occur in Pakistan. Early detection to address the causative agent can help in the treatment of the disease.

a. Malaria occurs when female mosquitoes transmits parasites in the liver and attacks red blood cells. Symptoms include severe chills, sweats and high fever.

b. Dengue Fever is a mosquito borne tropical disease caused by the dengue virus. Symptoms typically begin 3-14 days after infection. May start with non- specific flu- like symptoms of chills, headache, pain in the back of the eye, loss of appetite, include high grade fever, vomiting, muscle and joint pains and characteristic rash. Recovery generally takes 2-7 days.
c. Yellow Fever is perhaps the most severe. It causes viral infection of the respiratory passages. In severe cases, hemorrhagic fever may occur.

2. Ischemic Heart Disease.
Also known as Coronary Heart Disease is one of the most lethal diseases were mortality rates was included as one of the top 10 leading causes in Pakistan. Common causes attributed to the prevalence of the disease includes obesity, high cholesterol levels, exposure to harmful pollutants including industrial fumes, smoking, air pollution.

3. Intestinal Infections.
Contamination due to poor sanitation practices with contributing factors due to the lack of resources and poor hygienic practices during food preparation. Intestinal infections include cholera, typhoid fever, dysentery, food poisoning and diarrhea.

4. Bacterial Diseases.
Most common infections include urinary tract infections and throat infections. Tuberculosis is also one of the most common diseases that causes of death in Pakistan. Be mindful however, that Tuberculosis is treatable and can be controlled with the use of medicines that have been proven in combatting the said microorganism.

5. Viral Diseases.
The virus as a causative agent in these diseases include viral hepatitis, mumps, rabies, measles, chicken pox, and many more.

6. Hepatitis A and E.
The most common and serious liver concern in Pakistan includes Hepatitis A and E. Hepatitis A is transmissible through food handling. It is primarily fecal- oral route, when one ingests food or water that is contaminated with the feces of an infected person. Hepatitis E is a liver disease but it is self -limited, acute illness. Acute infection can become chronic and in primary cases for those who received organ transplant. It iis prevalent that we need to be careful in transmitting to the general population.

7. Tuberculosis.
It is contagious and can spread through coughing and sneezing when body fluid can be sprayed to the air. According to WHO, Pakistan ranks as 8 out of 22 countries in the world that are highly prone to tuberculosis. It is caused by mycobacterium tuberculosis and can invade the respiratory and central nervous systems. Furthermore, it can go to different organs like the brain, bones, joints and other organs.

8. Cancer.
One of the most emerging cause of high mortality in Pakistan is Cancer, representing 8% of all deaths. Lung cancer and breast cancer are the two most common types in Pakistan. As we all know access to treatment is difficult because of difficult funding of cancer facilities that gives free medical assistance to our poor Pakistani cancer patients.

9. Diabetes.
The food preferences that we have is somehow attributed to the food prepared on our tables, it contributes to the development of diabetes. Foods are prepared swimming in fats and diving in either saltiness or sweetness, it is attributed to our culture and our traditional recipes.

10. Stroke.
There are two types” Ischemic and Hemorrhagic strokes. This are classifications of the stroke. Ischemic is when the blood flow in blood vessel or artery is impeded by a blood clot and is unable to reach the brain. Hemorrhage results in internal bleeding of the brain due to rupture of a brain blood vessel. It is ranked as a major cause of death in Pakistan.
