Facts about the COVID 19

1. COVID- 19 disease is caused by the new coronavirus that emerged in China, a pneumonia of unknown cause, detected in Wuhan, China and was reported last December 31, 2019, at WHO Country Office in China.

2. It was on January 9, 2020 was when the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported that a new coronavirus, severe and acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS Cov-2), had been identified as the causative agent of the coronavirus.

3. It was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 30 January, 2020.

4. WHO announced a name for the new coronavirus disease on February 11, 2020, now known worldwide as COVID- 19.

COVID-19 symptoms include cough, fever, shortness of breath, muscle aches, sore throat, unexplained loss of taste or smell, diarrhea and headache. COVID- 19 can be severe and some cases have caused death to thousands of people around the globe. The coronavirus can spread from person to person. It is diagnosed with a laboratory test. There is no vaccine for coronavirus yet. Prevention methods to stop, if not lower or decrease the rate of the spread of the disease are thereby emphasized which includes practices of frequent handwashing, coughing at your bent elbows, staying at home when you are sick and wearing a face covering and practice social distancing.

Protecting yourself and others from COVID-19
These are practical tips to do, so that you can reduce your chances of being infected or spreading COVID-19 by taking simple precautions:

1. Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.
Why?

- Washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol based hand-rub kill viruses that may be in your hands.


2. Maintain at least 1 meter (3 feet) distance between yourself and Why?
- When someone coughs, sneezes, or speaks they spray small liquids droplets from their mouth or nose which may contain the virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus, if the person has the disease.


3. Avoid going to crowded places.
Why?

- When people come together in crowds, you have a high probability of being exposed to one or two infected individual. It would be certainly difficult to practice social distancing in crowded places , especially if the establishment do not practice the required mandate of local authorities to impose the said rule as a new normal.


4. Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth.
Why?
- Hands touch too many surfaces and pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose and mouth. From there the virus can
enter your body and infect you.


5. Follow good respiratory hygiene.
This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough and sneeze. Then dispose
of the used tissue immediately and wash your hands.
Why?
- Droplets spread virus. By following good respiratory hygiene you protect the people around you from viruses like colds, flu and COVID-19. Coughing, sneezing and even just a simple face to face talk has simple spray of body fluid emission thus the need for an enhanced good respiratory practices is encouraged to be taught even at a young age.


6. Stay home and self- isolate even with minor symptoms as cough and headache and mild fever, until you recover.
Have someone bring you supplies. If
you need to leave your house, wear a mask to avoid infecting others
Why?
- Avoiding contact with others will protect you from possible COVID-19 and other viruses.


7. Seek medical attention if you have symptoms like cough, fever and difficulty of breathing.
Call your medical facility in advance if possible, and follow
the directions of your local health facility in Pakistan.
Why?
- National and local authorities in Pakistan have the most updated information about the disease on the situation in your local area. Calling in advance will allow
your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility.This will protect you and help prevent the spread the virus to others.


8. Keep yourself updated by trusted sources such as WHO or your local and national health authorities.
Why?
- There are appointed agencies and local authorities placed by the government of Pakistan in collaboration with the WHO (World Health Organization) to giveupdated and relevant advice on what best practices should be done to protect ourselves from this current situation. This is to avoid confusion and rumors which could lead to panic during the pandemic.
